Since 1925, Makale is the capital city of the Toraja regency.
The hills surronding the city are crowned with churches (the photo above is taken from the steps of Bukit Sion church) while the crammed lower part of Makale is dominated by government buildings, many of them decorated with Toraja motives and sometimes built in Toraja style to keep tourists from moving on to Rantepao.
Makale is built around an articial lake with a liberation monument on an island in the middle of the lake.
