Wilayah Persekutuan is the Malay term for Federal Territory. Currently, there are three Federal Territories in Malaysia. They are Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.


The Federal Territories are administered under Federal Territories Ministry. Even though it has equivalent status to other states in Malaysia, it does not have a head of state, nor has any state assembly.

Federal Territory (Malay: Wilayah Persekutuan) is a collective of territories governed directly by the Malaysian federal government.
As of 2006, all Federal Territories fall under the juristriction of Ministry of Federal Territories which was formed under Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's administration on 27 March 2004.
Kuala Lumpur was ceded by the state of Selangor to the federal government on 1 February 1974, while Putrajaya became the third Federal Territory on 1 February, 2001.

After independence in 1957, Kuala Lumpur was the capital of the Federation of Malaya and continued to be the capital of the renamed Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
In 1 February 1972 Kuala Lumpur seceded from Selangor and the city became a Federal Territory (Wilayah Persekutuan).
Up until 2004, the superior courts of the federation (the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court) were housed in the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, since then the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court have moved to the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.
