Malir is a district in the east of the city of Karachi. It has a growing population of peoples from multiethnic backgrounds: there are a total of 900 000 people in the district. It has lots of gardens. The trees are of date palms and other fruit trees. Peoples relocate from the city center of Karachi to East of Karachi - Malir - because it has less air pollution and the density of population is much less than other towns of Karachi. Malir is well connected to other towns by roads, railroads and the national Highway which connects it to the rest of Pakistan. Karachi International Airport is within half an hour's drive away provided the traffic does not get congested. Malir Town is a small densely populated town in the eastern part of Karachi, with Quaid-e-Azam International Airport and the Malir Cantonment to the west and north, the Malir River and Shah Faisal Town to the south and Gadap Town to the east across the Thado Nallo stream.
The population of Malir Town was estimated to be about 400,000 at the 1998 census, of which 99% are Muslim.
The federal government introduced local government reforms in the year 2000, which eliminated the previous third tier of government (administrative divisions) and raised the fourth tier (districts) to become the new third tier.
