Malistan is a district in the west of Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. Its population, which is 100% Hazara, was estimated at 100,000 in 2003. The district capital is Mir-a-Dina. After the provinces districts are the second level of administrative subdivisions in Afghanistan. ... Ghazni is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. ... The Hazara ethnic group resides mainly in the central Afghanistan mountain region called Hazarajat. They make up anywhere between 9-20% of Afghanistans population, but an accurate census has not been taken in decades so there is little information to verify at present. ...


In 2002, plans were drawn up to split Malistan into four separate districts, in order to increase Hazara political representation; however, these plans are not believed to have been carried through.
