Malone is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,981.

History

The town was formed from part of the Town of Chateaugay in 1805.


Famous natives include Almanzo Wilder, husband of "Little House" author Laura Ingalls Wilder, who told his story in the novel Farmer Boy. The son of James and Angeline Day Wilder, he was born on his family's farm near Malone on February 13, 1857. The family left Malone in 1871 to settle in Minnesota.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 266.2 km˛ (102.8 mi˛). 263.8 km˛ (101.9 mi˛) of it is land and 2.4 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.90% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,981 people, 4,114 households, and 2,620 families residing in the town. The population density is 56.8/km˛ (147.1/mi˛). There are 4,644 housing units at an average density of 17.6/km˛ (45.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 73.61% White, 18.56% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.25% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 11.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,114 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the town the population is spread out with 16.3% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 42.1% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 179.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 201.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $27,716, and the median income for a family is $37,500. Males have a median income of $25,996 versus $20,506 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,352. 12.7% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
