The centre of Maltepe has many bars and cafes similar to those found in Taksim on the European side of the city. During the earthquake of 1999 Maltepe suffered badly and many tall apartment blocks needed structural repair, some still bear the cracks of structural damage something which reduced the price of property in Maltepe considerably. Over the past 2 years however, prices have risen sharply in spite of warnings that Maltepe is still under threat from earthquakes in the future. Politically the area has always been a stronhold of the center right ANAP party (previously led by Mesut Yilmaz) but recent events including ANAP's ill fated coalition with the center left DSP of Bulent Ecevit (who many in Turkey blame for the economic crisis of recent years) and the far right extremist MHP led by Devlet Bahceli (His party had prommised once elected to scrap the ban on girls wearing headscalfs to University and bring in a string of measures to increas Islam in the country (such as Qur'an courses) which swayed much of the Islamist vote from Fazilet Party (none of these measures were implimented) led to the popular support for ANAP being lost (there were also numerous cases of corruption) and in recent elections AK party swept to power here (many MP's for AK party are former ANAP politicians) Bülent Ecevit (born on May 28, 1925) is a Turkish politician and was also a writer and journalist. ...
