Copra yielding coconut
Its economy is largely based on agriculture with a high level production of copra (dried coconut meat). Animal husbandry is the second biggest income earner, notably cattle farming. Other agricultural products are coconuts, maize, sugarcane, bananas, pineapples, mangoes; pork, eggs, beef; fish.
The economy has accelerated in the past decade driven by advances in global communication technology and the finishing of a modern highway that tremendously improved trade and transport.
Although it can be considered a "remote" town its population enjoys reliable communication facilities brought by advances in cellphone technology. A modern highway connects it to major towns and cities.
People
The majority of the population are of Ilonggo origin.
It was in a part of Malungon, bordering Kiblawan town in Davao del Sur, where the bulk of the marijuana plants were uprooted and seized in a raid last Tuesday.
The people of Malungon, officials said, expect the President to extol the significance of the uprooting and seizure of the illegal plants in the government's no-nonsense campaign to rid the country of the social menace brought about by drug abuse and addiction.
Malungon Mayor Teody Padernilla cited the people's cooperation in dealing with the marijuana plantation owner and his cohorts, who have been identified by the National Bureau of Investigation raiding team.
