Mam Tor is a 517 m (1696 ft) high peak near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England. Its name literally translates as Heights of the Mother and it is also known as the Shivering Mountain on account of the instability of its lower shale layers. Indeed, the A625 road now comes to a dramatic stop at the walls of the hillside, as a consequence of a landslide.
MamTor is an Iron Age fort overlooking Castleton and Hope Valley, Derbyshire.
The views from the summit of MamTor are superb, with a fine view of Edale and Kinder to the north and Hope valley to the east, and a splendid ridge leading from the summit down to Hollins Cross and along to Lose Hill.
The escarpments around MamTor and nearby Lord's Seat and Rushup Edge seem to attract winds at all times and this has led to it becoming the most popular local centre for hang-gliding and paragliding.
