Due to its location bordering the Atlantic Ocean, the population of Manasquan increases dramatically in the summer months as tourists — derisively referred to by locals as "bennies" — flock to the beach. The Manasquan Inlet provides some of the East Coast's best surfing (sometimes over 15 foot swells) with waves being corralled, refracted and enlarged by the jetty protruding out into the Atlantic Ocean. Manasquan also has a downtown area with many small businesses. The Algonquin Arts Theatre has shows and movies that play throughout the year.

In recent years, Manasquan has become more of a year round community, a fact stemming from the increase in the demolition of traditional beach bungalows and their replacement with family dwellings. The decrease in tourism and rise in residency can be attributed to the decline of once popular tourist destinations; Manasquan no longer has a 24-hour diner, miniature golf course, arcade, and has lost many of the bars it once contained. New Jersey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (6600 words)
New Jersey is a politically competitive state; the Governorship alternated between the parties from the election of Richard J. Hughes in 1961 until Democrat Jon Corzine was elected to replace a Democrat in 2005; the legislature has also switched hands, and one house was evenly divided from 1999–2001.
New Jersey is also home to several other urban legends, such as the ghost of Annie's Road in Totowa, Midgetville in Edgewater, Albino Village in Clifton, the supposed KKK hotbed Whipporwill Valley Road in Middletown, the haunted and demon-possessed Clinton Road in West Milford, and the Witch of Igoe Road in Marlboro.
New Jersey is often known by outsiders with little respect for the state as "America's Armpit", both for its shape and location on the Eastern seaboard and for the smell that exists especially along the New Jersey Turnpike (I95) due to the landfills, chemical plants, and wetlands mud.
