The Manasquan River is a major waterway in central New Jersey. It flows from central Monmouth County, beginning in Howell Township, to the Atlantic Ocean, where it empties between the towns of Manasquan and Point Pleasant. It widens greatly as it nears the ocean, making it ideal for boating, and is a very popular recreational area of the New Jersey Shore.
The River is the center of a large watershed area that incorporates numerous streams as well as a large reservoir in Howell Township. It also marks the traditional boundary between "North" and "South" New Jersey; it separates Monmouth and Ocean counties, and marks the border between rich, fertile soil to the north and the sandier soil of the "Pine Barrens" to the south.
A large island in the middle of the river near its inlet, just off the town of Brielle, is commonly believed to be the inspiration of Robert Louis Stevenson's Italic textTreasure Island,Italic text which was written in large part while Stevenson lived in Manasquan.
The Manasquan river is the northernmost terminal of the Intracostal waterway.
An angler fished the river after a recent October rain as it was dropping to a near normal level and becoming less muddy (ideal fishing conditions).
Fish the river as it is dropping, becoming less muddy and approaching near normal levels.
In New Jersey, the ManasquanRiver is one of the few streams stocked with brown trout during the trout season where stocking occurs relatively close to the point where saltwater meets freshwater.
