History

Manawatu Rugby Union was founded in 1886 and is one of New Zealand's oldest rugby unions. It has on occasions combined with Horowhenua (now known as Horowhenua-Kapiti), under the name Manawhenua.

Manawatu's glory days were during the 1970s. Holding the Ranfurly Shield in the years 1976, 1977, 1978. Also winning the 1st Division NPC in 1980. Runner-up in the years 1976 and 1981.

Manawatu celebrated its Centenary in 1986.
