Manchester is a town located in Ontario County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,258.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.9 km˛ (37.8 mi˛). 97.8 km˛ (37.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.0 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.


Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 9,258 people, 3,589 households, and 2,447 families residing in the town. The population density is 94.6/km˛ (245.0/mi˛). There are 3,815 housing units at an average density of 39.0 persons/km˛ (101.0 persons/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.69% White, 0.53% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,589 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 31.8% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.01.
