Mandopop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (466 words)
Mandopop (or mandapop) is a colloquial abbreviation for "Mandarin pop music".
For a long time Taiwan was the centre of mandopop, with artists from other countries with large Chinese communities like Singapore and Malaysia also contributing artists who became popular with the large Taiwanese record labels such as Rock Records.
Mandopop titles are available to overseas Chinese communities such as San Francisco Bay Area, Greater Los Angeles/Orange County, New York City Metropolitan Areas in the United States, and Vancouver, BC and Toronto Metropolitan Areas in Canada.
S-pop takes over as Taiwan's Mandopop stars fade - JULY 19, 2006 (1216 words)
It was not too long ago when Singapore teens went ga-ga over every other Taiwanese pretty boy (read floppy fringe and manga-cute face) who debuted after F4, snapping up multiple copies of their albums and queueing for days just to see them.
Given the decline of the Mandopop scene in recent years due to piracy, MP3s and the flood of parallel imports from China, local record labels now consider sales of 3,000 copies satisfactory and have to contend with small turnouts at autograph sessions, down to as few as 200 fans.
Industry sources say that the inevitable reality is that we may risk becoming a closed market and lose our hard-earned edge as a vibrant regional Mandopop hub that is a must-visit for all Chinese popsters.
