He was elected for a 6 year term to the Rajya Sabha in March, 2006 after being trounced in the last Lok Sabha election by a hithero unknown Congress candidate from the Central Mumbai constituency. His humiliating defeat was not taken too kindly by Bal Thackeray, and Joshi was subsequently barred entry to "Matoshree" bungalow for several weeks after that. But master manipulator that he is, he squirmed his way back into Thackeray's inner circle soon after the dust settled. Although one of the seniormost leaders in the Shiv Sena, his clout and credibility have eroded over the years and he today stands mostly marginalized within his own party.


A shrewd businessman and self-styled "Principal", he is the propreitor of the Kohinoor chain, comprising of technical schools, hotels, construction, real estate to name just a few. He also maintains cordial personal and business relations with ousted Shiv Sena youth leader Raj Thackeray and NCP leader Sharad Pawar, much to the chagrin of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.
