Manufacturing Execution Systems

Manufacturing Execution Systems (MESs) are critical to the success of large manufacturing operations today. These automated systems help control processes, materials, manpower and all the other inputs required for the smooth functioning of a manufacturing unit. Such systems are expensive and involve large levels of automation, sensors, and software. The end result however, is a manufacturing system that is much more responsive to market trends, demand, and inventory levels. The tie-in with ERP systems also ensure minute by minute assesments and decisions to be made about variables such as pricing, quantity, inventory, etc.

MES speeds up processes for the manufacturing sectors by:

 1. Reducing manufacturing cycle times 2. Increasing Inventory and cost tracking, mostly real-time 3. Improving Turnover tracking 4. Improving quality levels and lesser defects 5. Achieving Higher returns on assets 6. Improving margins and cash flow 7. Improving turn-around-times (TATs) 8. Integrating with ERP and existing processes

Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) - AGVS AS PART OF A FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM (883 words)
Today, there are hundreds of instances of computer-controlled systems designed to handle and transport materials, many of which have replaced conventional human-driven platform trucks.
Although the choice of a transport system is often viewed as a technical issue, like every capital decision it demands a comparative economic study.
AGV systems can reduce manual handling damage, and the vehicles are always available, alleviating problems associated with scheduling employees on nights, weekends, and holidays.
