Marais Viljoen (2 December 1915 - 4 January 2007) was the last non-executive State President of South Africa from June 4, 1979 until September 3, 1984. He was succeeded by P. W. Botha. He had previously been the acting State President from August 21, 1978 to October 10, 1978, after which B.J. Vorster was elected to the position. Before that, he served in several National Party cabinets. He was the last non-executive State President of South Africa. The 1983 South African Constitution changed the status of the President to one exercising executive power.


Marais Viljoen died on 4 January 2007 due to heart failure.[1]
