Marcel Bich’s sound knowledge of the writing instrument trade enabled him to see the enormous potential of the ballpoint pen.
Bich launched his first ballpoint pen, which fully satisfied his demanding criterias: a precision instrument which wrote evenly and reliably for a long time, and which would be sold for an affordable price.
Not only was Marcel Bich a great competitor in business, he also led the French challenge in the prestigious yachting race, the America's Cup, defending the colors of the French flag in the years 1970, 1974, 1977 and 1980.

In Clichy (France) in 1950, Marcel BICH obtained the patent for a ballpoint pen invented by a Hungarian, Laslo Biro, improved its process, and introduced his own ballpoint pen which he called “pointe BIC®”, a shortened, easy-to-remember version of his own name.
Marcel Bich, who had been the production manager for a French ink manufacturer, buys a factory outside Paris and sets up business with his partner, Edouard Buffard, as a maker of fountain pen parts and mechanical lead pencils.
Marcel Bich introduces his ballpoint pen in Europe, which he calls “BIC” a shortened, easy-to-remember version of his own name.
