While Marchin’s lab is conducting the BST analyses, staff from the City of Wichita and Wichita State University’s biology department have conducted field work and developed initial bacteria cultures.
Marchin, who has conducted water purification research at K-State for 25 years, first used BST technology in 1997 to track bacteria in water runoff from feedlots.
But DNA testing is more expensive, and Marchin says his research team is not interested in identifying each animal or human that is causing fecal contamination, but rather the species that’s involved.
