Marcus Vettius Bolanus was a Roman soldier and politician.


He served in Asia under Corbulo in AD 62 and had been made consul in AD 66.


He became governor of Roman Britain in AD 69 following the troubles that had left his troops divided in their loyalties. He also had to face the second insurrection of Venutius amongst the Brigantes.

Trajan was the son of Marcia and Marcus Ulpius Traianus, a prominent senator and general from the famous gens Ulpia.
The family had settled in the province of Hispania Baetica in what is now Andalusia, a province that was thoroughly Romanized and called southern Hispania.
