Maria Eagle (born 17 February1961, Bridlington) is a British politician and lawyer. She is Member of Parliament for Liverpool Garston, and is a member of the Labour Party. She entered Parliament in the 1997 election and was appointed to serve as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions. Following her re-election in the 2005 general election, she was appointed to the Department for Education and Skills as Minister of State Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families. Eagle was born in Bridlington, North Yorkshire, the daughter of a printworker, she was educated at St Peter's Church of England School in Formby and the Formby High School, before attending Pembroke College, Oxford where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1983.
Eagle was elected to the House of Commons at the 1997 General Election at Liverpool Garston following the retirement of the veteran Labour MP Edward Loyden.
Eagle was first elected in the 1992 election when she defeated the Minister for Overseas Development at the Foreign Office Lynda Chalker by 3,809 votes, and has remained an MP since.
She was joined in the House of Commons at the 1997 General Election by her identical twin sister, MariaEagle, thus probably becoming the first set of twins to sit in the House, but certainly the first set of twin sisters.
