Maria Louisa's life was marked by Napoleon’s actions. The Duchy of Parma had been lost to France in 1796. When Bonaparte conquered the Duchy of Parma in 1800, he deposed Duke Ferdinand, Louis’ father. Napoleon compensated the House of Bourbon-Parma by giving, the kingdom of Etruria, created from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, to Louis and Maria Luisa. They did not remain long in Florence as they returned to Spain to attend the the double wedding of Maria Louisa's brother Ferdinand and Maria Antonia of Naples and of infanta Maria Isabel, Maria Luisa’s youngest sister, with the future Francis I of Naples. Soon after the couple returned to Etruria, Louis died on 27 May 1803 at the age of 30, as a consequence of an epileptic seizure. After Napoleon's downfall in 1815, the Congress of Vienna did not return the Duchy of Parma to Maria Louisa, whose son was the rightful heir. Parma was given instead to Maria Louise of Austria, Napoleon's wife. As a compensation, thanks to the influence of her brother, Ferdinand VII of Spain, Maria Louisa and her son received the smaller Duchy of Lucca with the honors of a queen as she had had before in Etruria. Maria Louisa reached Lucca in 1817 with the firm desire to cancel every trace of the government of Lucca former ruler Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister, who had replaced her in 1808 in the throne of Tuscany. Maria Luisa ruled Lucca in her own name even after her son reach adulthood, while he was known as the prince of Lucca. During her government, the sciences continued to flourish. Between 1817 and 1820 She ordered the complete renewal of the inner decorations of Ducal Palace. Maria Luisa governed as an authoritarian ruler until her death.
