She was taken to France as prisoner. Her husband abdicated the throne in 1808, due to pressure from Napoleon. Maria Luisa, Godoy and the abdicated king spent remainder of their lives outside Spain. Her husband died also in 1819.

It has been reported that several of her children were not sired by her husband, who simultaneously was her first cousin. For example, infante don Francisco's (the Duke of Cadiz) features are reporeted to have been resembled very closely those of Godoy's. Her 14 children were:
