Born in 1826 in Brixton, London daughter of W. H. Burgess, she was brought by her parents to Tasmania in 1833. At the age of 17 she married Jerome (originally Girolamo) Carandini, an Italian of noble birth who was a political refugee. She came to Sydney in 1846 and studied under Isaac Nathan and other teachers. She soon established a reputation as a concert singer and as an operatic prima donna, both at Sydney and Melbourne, and was a popular favourite throughout Australia. Her husband having received a pardon from the Italian government went to Italy in 1870, but died at Modena soon after his arrival. Madame Carandini continued to sing in concerts for some years throughout Australia and New Zealand, with visits to America and India. She had eight children of whom five daughters were musical and took part in her tours. She died at London in 1894. Her eldest daughter, Rosina Palmer was a notable soprano in Australia, and her son Cristoforo was an Australian bushman and adventurer known as Christy Palmerston. Her great grandson (by her son Major Frank James Carandini, 11th Marquess of Sarzano) is the actor Christopher Lee. Christopher Frank Carandini Lee, CBE (born May 27, 1922 in London) is a legendary and prolific British actor known for his versatility and film longevity.
Lee is a direct lineal descendent of Charlemagne through his mother's side, a famous Edwardian beauty, the Contessa Estelle MarieCarandini di Sarzano.
The Carandini family was given the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
CARANDINI, MARIE (1826-1894), prima donna, was baptized Maria on 1 February 1826 at St Matthew's Church of England, Brixton, London, daughter of James Burgess, coachman, and his wife Martha.
In September 1854 when Catherine Hayes arrived in Sydney, Carandini was in Hobart for the birth of another daughter but in July 1855 she was chosen to sing the tenor parts, 'suitably adjusted to the soprano register' in Hayes's triumphal opera season at the Theatre Royal in Melbourne in October.
Among Carandini's roles were Elvino in Bellini's La Sonnambula and Gennaro in Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia; earlier she had an enthusiastic reception from music critics for her 'vivacious and piquant' Maria in Donizetti's Daughter of the Regiment, claimed to be the most ambitiously staged opera yet presented in the colonies.
