She was born as 'Marie Sophie Friederike von Hessen-Kassel', the eldest child of Prince Charles of Hesse-Cassel and Princess Louise of Denmark.

Her paternal grandparents were Landgrave Frederick II of Hesse-Cassel and Princess Mary of Great Britain. Mary was a daughter of George II of Great Britain and Caroline of Ansbach.
