Early life

According to John Hubner's book Bottom Feeders, (1994), Chambers came from a middle-class household. Her father was in advertising and her mother was a nurse. She was the youngest of three children and was always trying to get her parents' attention. Her father discouraged her when she told him she wanted to be a model, citing brutal competition. Chambers landed some modeling gigs in New York, but she moved to California to get more work. There, she landed a small role in the Barbra Streisand starrer The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), where she was credited as Evelyn Lang. Her parents still weren't impressed and urged her to come home. Instead, Chambers kept auditioning but didn't land anything other than a low-budget film Together(1971) in which she appeared nude. Depressed, she left Los Angeles and moved to San Francisco where she held several jobs, including work as a topless model and a bottomless dancer. She also married a hippie named Doug. (She didn't provide his last name to writer John Hubner.) Adult film career

Marilyn had seen an advertisement for a casting call. She rushed over to the audition only to find out that it was for a porno film. She was about to walk out the door when the Mitchell brothers stopped her, because she resembled Cybill Shepherd, feeling that a wholesome blond actress is needed for their film. They didn't know that earlier, she had modeled as the cover girl on the Ivory Snow soap box, where she posed holding the baby. (According to some urban legends, she was the baby; this turned out to be false, as was the claim that the baby was Brooke Shields.) The product's manufacturer, Procter & Gamble quickly dropped her after it discovered her double life as an adult film actress. For Behind the Green Door, Chambers, who was ambivalent about starring in the film, asked the film's producers, the Mitchell brothers, Artie and Jim, a $25,000 salary and a percentage of the gross, never expecting that they would agree. After filming concluded, she dropped the Ivory Snow bombshell, which resulted in her being billed as the "99 and 44/100% pure" girl.
