Mariupol was known from the beginning of the 16th century as the Cossack fortress named Kalmius. The settlement became a town in 1778. In 1780, after the migration of the Greeks from the Crimea to the region the town was renamed "Mariupol' " at their request. Old Mariupol (the area is limited in the south to coast of sea of Azov, in the east - Kalmius river, in the north -Shevchenko Blvd., in the West – Metallurgov Av.) built up mainly few-storey houses, has kept the pre-revolutionary architecture. Geography and climate

Geography

Mariupol is in the south of Donetsk area, on coast of sea of Azov, in a mouth of the river Kalmius. The city occupies the area of 166,0 km ² (with suburbs, i.e. the territories subordinated to the Mariupol city council - 244,0 km ²). The area under building - 106,0 km ², the area of parks and gardens - 80,6 km ². Ground of territory of city mainly solonetzic chernozems, with a significant amount of underground subsoil waters, that frequently leads to landslips.


Climate

There is moderate-continental climate with often droughts and dry winds in the summer and thawing weather, fogs - in the winter. Annual quantity of deposits - 400 mm a year. Agroclimatic conditions allow to raise in suburbs of Mariupol thermophilic agricultural crops with the long vegetative period (sunflower, melons, grapes etc). However water resources in region are insufficient, and consequently for needs of the population and the industry ponds and water basins are used.

In 1989 by all enterprises of city it was thrown out in an atmosphere through 5,215 sources of pollution of 752.9 thousand tone of harmful substances in a year (about 98% fell at metallurgical enterprises and "Markokhim").
