Before entering the movie industry the Illinois-born, Southern California-raised Best studied at the Chouinard School of Art and then briefly worked as a school teacher. She went to work as a designer for the renowned Western Costume Company in 1926, then several years later moved to United Costumers. When Warner Brothers bought that company in 1936, she accepted a job in the studio's wardrobe department, and it wasn't long before she became one of the company's finest costume designers, noted for her work on men's costumes and period films.
