Hateley's best days were arguably at Rangers, where he scored both goals in a title-clinching 2-0 victory against Aberdeen on the final day of the 1990-91 season. He left Rangers in 1995 with family problems suspected to be the catalyst for the move. However, in 1997, with Rangers trying to win their ninth title in a row, and with a huge injury list, manager Walter Smith desperately needed a striker, and re-signed Hately for the vital game against Rangers' eternal enemies, Celtic. Rangers won the game 1-0, but Hately was sent off. However, most commentators thought that the mere presence of Hately had given Rangers a psychological advantage and that it was a signing that had paid off. Mark of respect - [Sunday Herald] (884 words)
MARK HATELEY was, in every sense of the word, an internationalist – at club level he spent three seasons apiece at AS Monaco and AC Milan and for England he made 32 appearances.
Hateley’s role in the double season of 1991-92 and the treble campaign of 1992-93 was immense, as was his input to the mem orable Champions League run of the same season.
Hateley deserves his ranking among the greatest strikers of the modern era, not simply because of his goalscoring record, but also because of his strength of character and mental toughness as well as being a team player.
