Kings Playing Style

The tremendously sought-after playing style of Mark King is mostly based on continous 16th playing. According to an interview King has developed this "machine-gun-style" since he felt easily uncomfortable in front of an audience when he wasn't playing. Therefore, he tried to put more and more notes into a song until he practically played almost all 16ths of a song. An example for his style would be the 1980 song "Love Games" (108BPM) in which he starts out with: E - Mute - E - Mute / Mute - E - Mute - E (muted) / E - Mute - Mute - E(7th fret on G) / Mute (on E) - Mute (on D) - 5th fret on D and 7th fret on D -> Or in Short E, M, E, M M, E, M, M E, M, M, E(on G), M, M(on D), 5thFret on D, 7th fret on D

To master this style, one has -as in most things- to really slowly practice from the ground up. It is essential to practice with a Metronome or better yet a drum machine.
