As a veteran talk-show host, Riley has established a reputation for his approach to controversy and his skill at remembering details and statistics. His first on-air opportunity came as host of the public-affairs program Urban Notebook, which became very popular. In 1986, Riley moved to the prime-time morning slot, broadcasting live from the Apollo Theatre. Since that time, he has worked his way up through a variety of roles at the station: writer, editor, managing editor, executive editor, program director, and on-air host. After Morning Sedition was cancelled in December 2005, Riley now hosts his own morning show on Air America. The new show, Air America Mornings, has more serious political coverage and less of the frenetic-DJ feel and juvenile drug-based humor which characterized Morning Sedition.
