As a veteran talk-show host, Riley has established a reputation for his approach to controversy and his skill at remembering details and statistics. His first on-air opportunity came as host of the public-affairs program Urban Notebook, which became very popular. In 1986, Riley moved to the prime-time morning slot, broadcasting live from the Apollo Theatre. Since that time, he has worked his way up through a variety of roles at the station: writer, editor, managing editor, executive editor, program director, and on-air host. In addition to his live radio program, Riley is a popular television political analyst with bi-weekly appearances on New York 1 News — Inside City Hall, CNN Reporters Roundtable, and the Fox News Channel. After Morning Sedition was cancelled in December 2005, Riley now hosts his own morning show on Air America. The new show, Air America Mornings, has more serious political coverage and less of the frenetic-DJ feel and juvenile drug-based humor which characterized Morning Sedition.

Mark Riley joined the Seven Network in early 2004 as chief political correspondent after a distinguished 20 years in print journalism.
Mark was recruited to the Sydney Morning Herald soon after, where he covered NSW and Federal politics for eight years before being appointed New York correspondent for the paper and its sister publication in Melbourne, The Age, in 1998.
Mark provided several eyewitness accounts on that day and led the reporting out of New York for the Herald and the Age over the ensuing months.
