Steines went to University of Northern Iowa on a football scholarship. He graduated with a B.A. in radio and television. He married former Entertainment Tonight correspondant and Miss America 1993 Leanza Cornett on the island of Kauai on July 22, 1995. They have two sons, Kai Harper and Avery James "AJ".
