In Greek mythology, Maro raised Dionysus when he was an infant. Later, he became a priest of Apollo.

In English Renaissance literature, the Roman poet Virgil is sometimes refered to as Maro.

Maro (Also MaRo) is also the nickname for longtime Magic: The Gathering card designer Mark Rosewater. The truncated version of his name is both a card and a common shorthand around the Magic playing community.
