Encyclopedia > Marshall H. Stone

Marshall Harvey Stone (April 8, 1903January 9, 1989) was a American mathematician who made several important contributions in various areas of mathematical analysis, including in particular functional analysis. He also contributed to the theory of Boolean algebras.

Results which bear his name today include:

  • Stone-von Neumann theorem
  • Stone-Weierstrass theorem
  • Stone-Čech compactification
  • Stone's representation theorem for Boolean algebras
  • Stone-Tukey theorem.

Stone space - definition of Stone space in Encyclopedia (500 words)
In mathematics, Stone's representation theorem for Boolean algebras, named in honor of Marshall H. Stone, is the duality between the category of Boolean algebras and the category of Boolean spaces, i.e., totally disconnected compact Hausdorff topological spaces.
Stone's duality generalises to infinite sets of propositions the use of truth tables to characterise elements of finite Boolean algebras.
In detail, the Stone space of a Boolean algebra A is the set of all 2-valued homomorphisms on A, with the topology of pointwise convergence of nets of such homomorphisms.
