Martha Jefferson (nee Wayles) (otherwise known as Mrs. Martha Skelton) (1748 - 1782) was the U.S. wife of Thomas Jefferson, they were married from 1772 until her death in 1782 from complications of childbirth.


Born to a wealthy plantation owner, she was first married in 1766 to Bathurst Skelton (1744-68). They had one son, John (1767-71). On New Year's Day 1772 she married Jefferson, and they had six chidren: Martha Washington (1772-1836), Jane Randolph (1774-75), an unnamed son (b./d. 1777), Mary Wayles (1778-1804), Lucy Elizabeth (1780-81), and Lucy Elizabeth (1782-85).
