Rushent entered the music business in the early 70's as an engineer working on records by T Rex, David Essex and Yes amongst others. In the early 80's he started his own record label Genetic, which was going to sign the nascent new romantic acts Visage, Ultravox and Spandau Ballet, but problems at their parent record company scuppered that plan. Meanwhile he invested £250,000 in setting up a state of the art recording studio at his Berkshire home. The first fruits were the debut single by ex-Buzzcock Pete Shelley Homosapien, however it was the success of The Human League and their breakthrough 1981 album Dare which cemented his reputation as a producer. He is credited as one of the pioneers of remixing with his cut and paste version of Dare, 1982's Love and Dancing. He produced other acts at the time such as Altered Images and The Go-Go's but retired from record production shortly after. New Romantic was a New Wave music subgenre and fashion movement that occurred primarily in England during the early 1980s. ... Martin Rushent, one of the top record producers in England since the 70s, will be interviewed live in person by Blast 1386 presenter Mark Watkins on his Saturday music show on 26 February 2005, from 10am-1pm.
Martin started working as a sound engineer in the early and middle 1970's, on records by T. Rex (Electric Warrior) and David Essex (Out On The Street), among others.
Martin will be reflecting on his career so far and will be talking about working with singer Hazel O’Connor, who is about to release an album produced by him.
