Brief History

Located in Taos, New Mexico. The Spanish Colonial Era Hacienda was constructed by the family of Severino Martinez, father of Padre Martinez. A small building exisited on the site in the late 1700's and grew to an Hacienda of 21 rooms. Don Severino dealt in trade along the Chiahuahua Trail and also become Alcalde of Taos which was the equivalent of Mayor. The building, which is now a National Historic Landmark, was built in the fortress style to ward off attacks by the Comanches and Apache raiders of the plains. History

Although the Hacienda Martinez was not a Hacienda in the true sense of the word, it had its beginning when Don Severino Martinez moves his family from Abique to Taos in the early 1880s and began construction of the Hacienda in 1804 where a few exisiting structures already exisited. The Plains Indians still raided the valley so the Hacienda was constructed as a fortress. In the years following the construction of the Hacienda Martinez, Severino Martinez built a flourishing mercantile buisness trading on the Chiahuahua Trial into Mexico with goods from Northern New Mexico. Modern Tourism

The Hacienda was purchased by Taos Historic Museums in 1972. It has been fully restored and hosts hundred of visitors every year as a living museum honoring the contributions of the early Hispanic settlers in the Taos Valley.
