Marvin Davis, who died in Beverly Hills on September 25 aged 79, was the billionaire oilman and media mogul who sold 20th Century Fox to Rupert Murdoch.
Davis arrived on the Hollywood scene as the new co-owner of the Fox studios - his partner in the deal was the controversial oil trader Marc Rich - in 1981, having made his fortune from "wildcat" oil and gas drilling in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Marvin Davis was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 28 1925 and graduated from New York University in 1947.
