Early political career

As the daughter of a Senator, Hanafin was involved in politics from an early age. She joined Ógra Fianna Fáil at the age of fifteen and spoke at her first Ard Fheis two years later at the age of seventeen. [1] Hanafin first became involved in national politics at the relatively young age of twenty-one in 1980 when she was elected to the Fianna Fail national executive, the party’s ruling body. Five years later in 1985 she caused controversy when she became one of only nine national executive members to vote against the expulsion of Desmond O'Malley from the party. This rebellious vote came in spite of an order from the party leader, Charles Haughey, that O’Malley should be expelled due to the fact that he had voted against his own party in the Dáil on a number of important issues. This act did not prove to be a disadvantage to Hanafin’s political career, as later that year she was elected to Dublin City Council as a Fianna Fail representative. Recent political career

Hanafin was elected to the Dáil as a Fianna Fail candidate on her second attempt at the 1997 general election. In her first few years as a TD she served on a number of Oireachtas committees, including Education & Science, Heritage & the Irish language and Justice, Equality & Women’s Affairs. After just two and a half years in the Dáil Hanafin was appointed Minister of State (with special responsibility for Children) in 2000. This was one of the newly-expanded junior ministry positions created by the new government in 1997, and, although it did not hold cabinet rank, it was regarded as a hugely important position. After topping the poll in her constituency at the 2002 general election Hanafin was promoted to the position of Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach. This is effectively the position of government chief whip and is regarded as one of the most senior Minister of State positions due to the fact that the incumbent is allowed to attend cabinet meetings. Following a cabinet reshuffle in September 2004 Hanafin joined the cabinet as Minster for Education & Science. Since her appointment to this portfolio, Hanafin, as a former teacher herself, has improved relations with the teacher trade unions, following a difficult period evident during the incumbency of her predecessor, Noel Dempsey. She has, however, abandoned the compilation of school league tables, [2] which her predecessor was investigating. Hanafin has also had to deal with controversies over the condition of some of the country’s schools regarding building projects and class size. School bus safety was also pushed to the top of the agenda for Hanafin following the tragic death of five schoolgirls near Navan, County Meath in 2005. The future

Like many other high-profile female TDs and government ministers, Hanafin is sometimes touted in the media as the one of the women likely to lead Fianna Fáil in the future and possibly become Ireland’s first female Taoiseach.
