The Mary Jane Girls are a popular American R&B, Soul, Funk and Pop group from the 1980s. The group consisted of four women: Joanne (Jojo) McDuffie, Candice (Candi) Ghant, Kim (Maxi) Wuletich and Ann (Cheri) Bailey. They were protégés of the legendary 80s singer Rick James, with JoJo the only member starting out as his backup singer and then becoming successful in her own right as the lead singer of the Mary Jane Girls. Rise to Success

The name of the group was created in the vein of James' passion for the drug marijuana. The group consisted of 4 females with distinctive character looks and matching personalities. Joanne "JoJo" McDuffie/Funderberg - Street Tuff/Female RickJames Kimberly "Maxi" Wuletich/Bond - Leather Queen/Dominatrix CherylAnne "Cheri" Bailey/Wells - Valley Girl/CheerLeader Candice "Candi" Ghant - Sexy Model/Vamp Yvette "Corvette" Marine/Barlowe - ValleyGirl/Replacement JoJo was the only original member of the group to sing back ground for Rick. The first project recorded was to be her solo debut. JoJo sang lead and background vocals with the Water Sister's who are famous studio singers. However, Motown thought the demo's they heard were the female group Rick had promised. With no group Rick had to get whom he could to form a group. The Water Sister continued to sing with JoJo on all the Mary Jane Girl projects with the band providing vocals during live performances with JoJo. Success With "In My House"

The single, "In My House", was a worldwide hit reaching number #1 on the BillBoard Pop and R&B Charts. The song was a follow-up to the group's first hits, "Candyman" and "Boys". The song, "In My House", was originally recorded by Rick James and Eddie Murphy.However, JoJo's version was decided by Motown and Rick as the best and put on the second Lp "Only Four You"


The cover of the Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons hit, "Walk Like a Man", was featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 blockbuster hit, "A Fine Mess". The album saw another release in the spring of 1986, but due to problems with the label and James himself, "Shadow Lover" received little promotion. other entertainment projects. It is unknown what the other members were doing.


Career in the 90s and into Today

In the 90's after Candi and Maxi left the group JoJo continued to perform as "JoJo" Former Original Lead Singer Mary Jane Girls. She also recorded with Rick James on his "Urban Rhapsody" CD, the track "Never say you love me again" which was written for Teena Marie. JoJo performed as a solo act with Rick for the "Urban Rhapsody " tour.

Yvette "Corvette" Marine/Barlowe sued Paula Abdul, claiming that it was her singing the lead vocals on a majority of Abdul's debut album Forever Your Girl. Motown released "In My House: The Very Best of the Mary Jane Girls". The 14-track set never received U.S. certification, but was heavily praised by fans of the girl group, because it featured their biggest hits ("All Night Long", "In My House"), minor hits ("Walk Like A Man"), and album cuts from both of their albums. Seven years later 20th Century Masters released "The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Mary Jane Girls which was also well recieved.


In 1995 JoJo, Candi & Maxi appeared on daytime talk show Jenny Jones as her first musical guest. Maxi, had reunited the group 1995 under the acronym MJG. Candi and Maxi left the group for reasons personal and unknown during 1996-1997. The group appeared on VH1's Where Are They Now show in 2003. Candi, Maxi, Cheri and Corvette appeared separate from JoJo who had just returned from Europe touring with Barry White. The Mary Jane Girls (whose name underscored James' fondness for marijuana) soon became an actual group, and in the early 1980s, were signed to Motown (the R&B powerhouse for which James and his protégé Teena Marie had been recording).
While JoJo was the tough street chick and Candi was the glamorous supermodel, Cheri was the cutesy Valley Girl and Maxi was the whip-toting, handcuff-carrying dominatrix in fl leather.
James did all of the writing and producing on The Mary Jane Girls' self titled debut album of 1983 (which boasted such hits as the infectious "Candy Man" and the sexy, irresistible "All Night Long") as well as on the group's sophomore effort of 1985, All Four You.
