Encyclopedia > Maryland Panhandle

The Maryland Panhandle is the narrow stretch of the western Maryland. The southern border of the panhandle (here with West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle) is made up of the Potomac River, and the border to Pennsylvania is a straight horizontal line. These two almost converge, forming the panhandle. It can be said to extend from Hagerstown westward. The narrowest point is reached near Hancock. Another important city in the panhandle is Cumberland.

The following counties are part of the Maryland panhandle:

  • Allegany
  • Garrett
  • Washington

panhandle: Definition, Synonyms and Much More from Answers.com (595 words)
A panhandle is an informal geographic term for an elongated tail-like protrusion of a geo-political entity, such as a subnational entity or a sovereign state.
A panhandle is similar to a peninsula in shape, but unlike a peninsula it is not surrounded by water on three sides and connected to a geographical mainland.
Instead, a panhandle is delimited by a land border on at least one side and extends out from the larger geographical body of the administrative unit.
