Mashriq or Mashreq is the region of Arabic-speaking countries to the east of Egypt. It is a designtion that distinguishes North Africa from what is commonly referred to as the Middle East. The geographical terms are from Arabic and date from the time when the center of power in north Africa was based on the expansion of Islam, first from Saudi Arabia, later from the Ottomans.
