Origins & History

Mashwani tribe is a Syed tribe descending from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and mercy of Allah be upon him) through his daughter Syedah Fatimah and his son-in-law Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with them). The lineage transcends down from Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A.A) and Hazrat Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (R.A.A). The progenitor of the Mashwanis migrated from the now Iraq to Iran and then to Afghanistan. Syed Muhammad Hamzah married a Pashtun woman of the Kakar tribe and had a son named Syed Masud Mashwani, form whom the tribe derives it's name. Since the Pashtun lineage traditionally stems from the father, this tribe is not recognised as a true Pashtun tribe according to Pashtunwali. The Mashwanis migrated to India and settled in different areas of the province now called N.W.F.P of Pakistant. Mashwani tribe can be mainly found in Sirikot, Gudwalian, Kundi in district Haripur, some are settled in Tor Dheri in district Swabi, a respectable number of them is settled in district Dir, some are settled in Mohmand Agency and some areas of Baluchistan Province. Demographics & Languages

Mashwanis are a brave and peaceful people. Some of them inhabit in the mountainous areas like mountains in a remote and beautiful village called Sirikotin district Haripur and distric Dir in N.W.F.P. Some of them live in the suburb of mountainous valley Sirikot Gudwalian (Goodvalley). SOme others live in Tor Dheri in district Swabi and district Mardan besides some others in Mohmand Agency. There is great number of Mashwanis in the cities of Peshawar and Quetta. Many of them have proved to be good soldiers in British army. After the birth of Pakistan, many still continued to join this profession. Many of the Mashwani who are living in Haripur are Pashto speaking. Another populated area of the Mashwani is Gudwalian, 14 km from Haripur and 15 km from Hasan Abdal. Gudwalian is behind Sirikot and in the bottom of high hills towards Haripur. Other important areas of the Mashwani are Basu Mera, Bugnian and Baka,Gallai, Boketar,Botigram, Serai, Bilaha, Chontrai, Darra, Khairoach, Sher Awwal, Kundi, Umar-Khaana.
