History

In 1945 Currys decided to form a new dedicated subsidiary company to deal with radio repairs. They named the company Belcher (Radio Services) Ltd after a company which produced radios for Currys in 1930's. The company expanded quickly in the post-war years with the resumption of television transmissions in 1948. The company renamed to Belcher (Electronic Services) Ltd in the 1960's to reflect the expansions in the types of repair work carried out.

With the introduction of colour television in 1968 and the increasing workload, the company was renamed Currys Group Service in 1972 to reflect the fact that they dealt mostly with repairs from Currys stores. In the 1980's, with improving reliability of electrical equipment and consequently a reduction of work from Currys stores, they started doing repairs for other dealers and the name was changed once more to C.G.S. Ltd. At this time, they also introduced the Mastercare brand to give the company a friendlier face to the public. 1972 (MCMLXXII) was a leap year starting on Saturday. ...

In 1984, Mastercare was bought by DSG International plc as part of its aqusition of Currys. Today, they focus on repairs for customers of DSG International's UK stores: Dixons, Currys, PC World and The Link. It is indeed an inside joke that Mastercare are otherwise known as Disastercare due to their lack of expertise when it comes to repairing products with some customers having to have their product sent back more than twice for the same fault. Divisions

Home Delivery

Mastercare has many delivery centres and hubs across the UK known as LDC's (Local Distribution Centre) and NDC's (National Distribution Centre). It is their job to deliver new products to customers homes, as well as to collect any item for repair for the service division.

Service

Service is in 3 parts.

  • In-shop: A customer can bring there item to any large Currys and find a repair shop instore.(This Service was discontinued in 2003 due to increased reliability of products)
  • In-home: A repairman will come to your home and try to fix it there. If this can not be done he arranges for it to be collected by an LDC.
  • Repair Centre: If an item can not be fixed in store or at home the item will be collected by the LDC and deliverd to the service centre. Once fixed the LDC will deliver to the customers home and reinstall.
