Inspiration

The trust runs many charitable institutions under the guidance of 'Amritanandamayi'. These humanitarian activities serve the most disadvantaged sections of society by providing development assistance, economic aid, medical aid, and educational facilities. Amritanandamayi's generous spirit of service is the inspiration for these activities which reach the poor of India. Answering a question about allegations that her relatives were rich (in the interview given to The Week), the Mata mentions that her father had 'about 20 boats' some of which he sold to set up a business for another brother. One brother is 'into building contracts' and also has 'some chocolate agency'. Another of her brothers has a 'money-lending business'. She said that they have been helped by her devotees but her father still earns his bread through hard work and does not take anything from the ashram.

Amritanandamayi was the keynote speaker at The Global Peace Initiative of Women Religious and Spiritual Leaders, at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland held in October 2002.
