Matakana Island is located in the western Bay of Plenty in New Zealand's North Island. A long, flat island, it is 20 kilometres in length but rarely more than three kilometres wide.


The island protects the entrance to Tauranga harbour and stretches west along the harbour to just north of Katikati.

This is the first year Matakana had entered the competition - a 100m swim and 200m kayak into Pilot Bay, followed by a 6km bike ride and a 2km run.
Matakana had six in its overall team, four of whom competed in the multisport challenge.
