Aberdeen is part of the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, together with the neighboring community of Matawan, New Jersey.
Owing to Rudyard's high office, this was quite controversial, and in 1685, the Board of Proprietors issued an order regarding the laying out of land.
On November 8, 1977, the residents of Matawan Township voted to change the name of the Township to create a community identity separate from that of Matawan Borough.
