MaterDeiInstitute of Education was founded in 1966 and in 1999 became a College of Dublin City University.
The Institute is distinctive in its adoption of the concurrent model of teacher education for second-level schools, in its new BA in Irish Studies and Religious Studies, in its postgraduate Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy programmes, and in its other postgraduate degrees to PhD level.
The Institute welcomes the introduction by the Department of Education and Science of new Religious Education syllabus in second-level schools and it commits itself to supporting teachers and students in the full implementation of this new and innovative programme of study.
Created as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin in 1975, it enrolled its first students in 1980 and was elevated to university status in 1989 by statute.
In 1979 the institution was located on a 85 acre site 3 miles from the city centre, just north of Albert Park; the Albert College Building is the only significant remaining building from before this period.
The early focus of the institution was, in particular, on science and technology although it has also had a large business school.
