Matherville is a village located in Mercer County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 772.


Geography

Matherville is located at 41°15'37" North, 90°36'21" West (41.260255, -90.605874)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.50% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 772 people, 290 households, and 216 families residing in the village. The population density is 764.3/km² (1,968.7/mi²). There are 301 housing units at an average density of 298.0/km² (767.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.45% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 290 households out of which 45.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% are married couples living together, 15.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.06.


In the village the population is spread out with 32.4% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $33,438, and the median income for a family is $39,375. Males have a median income of $37,273 versus $25,179 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,956. 15.8% of the population and 14.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The state FSA office announced Tuesday that a consolidation of county offices in Illinois will result in 26 of the 93 serving farmers to be consolidated with other nearby offices as a cost saving measure.
