Rahman’s remains returned to BD -DAWN - International; June 25, 2006 (407 words)
Rahman’s remains returned to BD DHAKA, June 24: Thirty-five years ago, Matiur Rahman, an air force officer from former East Pakistan, tried to defect in his military jet from Karachi to join the guerillas fighting the Pakistan Army in his homeland.
Matiur Rahman’s flag-draped coffin was received by Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on behalf of the nation, as members of the country’s defence forces gave a guard of honour, broadcast live by the state-run Bangladesh Television.
Rahman’s coffin will be kept at a national parade ground in the capital for public viewing on Sunday, and his remains will be buried with state honours along side other independence heroes, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs said in a statement.
Rashid Minhas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (325 words)
Rahman knocked out Minhas (he was originally believed to have used a blunt object, but it was later ascertained that he had used chloroform), with the intention of defecting to India in order to join the liberation movement for Bangladesh (see Bangladesh Liberation War).
Unknown to the PAF at the time, Rahman's family had already sought refuge in the Indian embassy in Karachi, and were awaiting his arrival in India.
In the ensuing battle between the two pilots, it is believed that either Rahman flew the plane into the ground to prevent the plane returning to the base, or Minhas did so in order to prevent Rahman from entering Indian territory.
