Encyclopedia > Matrix ring

In abstract algebra the matrix ring M(n,R) is set of all n-by-n matrices over an arbitrary ring R. This forms a ring under matrix addition and multiplication.

Properties

  • A matrix ring over a division ring is a simple ring. There is a partial converse in the form of the Artin-Wedderburn theorem.
  • A matrix ring over a prime ring is a prime ring.

simple ring: Definition and Much More from Answers.com (256 words)
According to the Artin-Wedderburn theorem, every simple ring that is left or right Artinian is a matrix ring over a division ring.
In particular, the only simple rings that are a finite-dimensional vector space over the real numbers are rings of matrices over either the real numbers, the complex numbers, or the quaternions.
An example of a simple ring that is not a matrix ring over a division ring is the Weyl algebra.
matrix group: Information from Answers.com (842 words)
In mathematics, a matrix group is a group where each element is a matrix, and the binary operation is given by matrix multiplication.
When the underlying ring of the matrix group is the real numbers, these matrix groups define Lie groups.
In particular representation theory studies homomorphisms from a group into a matrix group and character theory studies homomorphisms from a group into a field given by the trace of a representation.
